The Josh Jurgens coaching era got underway on Wednesday, Nov. 26, when the Richmond Red Devils welcomed the Hagerstown Tigers to the Tiernan Center. Before the game, coach Jurgens talked about how pleased he was with the effort his players have given him in practice and the quality depth he will have to work with this season. The Tigers also have a new coach. Tyler Stotler said playing in the Tiernan Center would be a good measuring stick for his program and will help make them better.
The game, played before a large, vocal crowd, was the first meeting on the hardwood between the two Wayne County schools since the 2019-20 season.
The Red Devils took an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers were their own worst enemy in the period, missing several point-blank shots and six free throws. The Tigers came back to cut their deficit to a single point at 17-16 when Kaden Hall scored inside with 1:25 remaining in the first half, but the Devils closed out the half on a 4-1 run to take a 21-17 lead at halftime. Both teams displayed balance in the first half. Five Red Devils scored in the first half, six different Tigers scored.

The Red Devils opened the second half on an 8-2 run to push their lead to 29-19 three minutes into the third quarter, forcing the Tigers to play catch-up for the rest of the game. Chasing Richmond’s quickness took its toll on the Tiger defenders, and the closest the Tigers came in the second half was the final 11-point margin. At the end of the day, the Red Devils had too much speed and depth. To win, the Tigers needed to shoot well, and they didn’t.
Three Red Devils reached double figures: Eli Hubbard and Thomas Stargell each scored 13 points and Treston Bennett scored 10 points. Jonny Howard led Hagerstown and all game scorers with 15 points. Isaac Schmitz scored 11 points.
Hagerstown head coach Tyler Stotler said Richmond looked a little different from other teams Hagerstown will see this year. “We will learn from this experience and improve,” he said. “We opened on the road against a 3A and a 4A school and we split. I think most people would be OK with that. We will be just fine.”
Richmond head coach Josh Jurgens was not available for postgame comment.
