Fountain City native, David R. Thomas, passed away on December 29 at Reid Hospital. He was retired from the U.S. Post Office after serving 37 years as a rural mail carrier.
Born in 1928 to Robert J. and Faye Ann (Kem) Thomas, David graduated from Fountain City High School in 1946. He received an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York, graduating in 1950. Thomas sailed around the globe during his time as both a Midshipman, and later as a third mate in the merchant fleet.
During the Korean War, Thomas transferred his Naval Reserve commission to the recently founded U.S. Air Force. He became an F-86 Sabre Jet pilot.
On leave from the Air Force, David married Norma Rupe in December of 1953. Their reception was held in what is now the Levi and Catherine Coffin State Historic Site, then owned by his bride’s family.
The couple lived in Germany for more than a year before Thomas’ returned to civilian life, resettling in Fountain City where he began his career with the Post Office.
Thomas was known for his humor which was often expressed in art. He created scores of impromptu watercolor drawing commemorating the funny predicaments of hometown life. His hobbies also included hunting, camping, and sailing.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, two children, David (Mark) Thomas, Indianapolis, Heather (Larry) Poe of Lebanon, granddaughter, Nicole Thomas, two great-grandchildren, Diana, and Lilianna Thomas-Gonzalez of Tucson, nephews Bobby Thomas, Tennessee, Dan Thomas, and Chris Thomas, both of Virginia.
According to his wishes, there will be no public services.
