Donald E. “Donnie” Longfellow, Jr., 65, formerly of Fountain City, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, June 20, 2021.
Donnie was born in Richmond, Indiana on July 30, 1955 to Donald E., Sr. & Willia Mae Heigle Longfellow, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a 1975 graduate of Northeastern High School and later graduated from the 60th Session of The Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
Donnie enjoyed a 23-year career with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, beginning in 1977. He served under Sheriffs John Catey, Larry Blunk, Dusty Davis, Burton Cole, Jerry Williams and Matt Strittmatter before retiring in 2000. Donnie was a member of FOP #63 and served as President in 1996, 1997 and 1999.
Donnie later worked as a driver for Milso Midwest and Matthews International, delivering caskets to funeral homes around Indiana. He was a 25-year member of Whitewater Masonic Lodge #159. Donnie enjoyed fishing and tinkering with cars when better health permitted.
Donnie will be missed by his loving companion and caregiver, Patricia Hagy Helms; daughters, Emily Moore and Natalie Martin & husband, Jack; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, brothers, Robbie Longfellow, Jeff Longfellow, Tim Longfellow and Joe Longfellow; and several nieces & nephews.
Visitation will be from 4-8 pm on Thursday, June 24, at the Smith-McQuiston & Webster Funeral Home, 321 US 27 South, Fountain City. A funeral ceremony will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, June 25 at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Earlham Cemetery.
Whitewater Masonic Lodge #159 will conduct a Masonic Service at 7:45 pm on Thursday, June 24 at the funeral home.
