Velma M. Wood, 90, of New Castle went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 28, 2020 following a brief illness. She was born October 3, 1930 in Rush County to John and Carry Mae (Gentry) Chesher.

She was a faithful member of the Whittier Lane Baptist Church since 1976 where she taught Sunday School for decades. She worked on a church bus route for many years and helped organize the Single Ladies Lunch Group on Sunday afternoons. The church hosted a senior trip each year, which she always looked forward to. An accomplished seamstress, she loved spending time with her family doing anything. Her homemade beef and noodles were loved by all and she made hundreds of pots for church and family gatherings. Her favorite vacation spot was Pigeon Forge, TN, and her last trip was in October celebrating her 90th birthday.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Rev. Frank (Wanda) Wood, Debbie Overshiner, Shirlee (Randy) Lester, all of New Castle, and Greg (Amanda) Wood of Mt. Summit; grandchildren, Jay Wood, Bob (Cindy) Wood, Betsy (Craig) Brown, Christie (Adam) McGeorge, Frank (Danielle) Wood Jr., Brian Watson, Andy (Mindi) Watson, John Watson, Kevin Lester, Stephanie (Adam) Engelberth, Katie Lester, Jamie Wood, and Carrie Wood; great grandchildren, Jane and Oscar Wood, Nathan, Daniel, Samuel, and Isaac Brown, Elijah, Titus, and Gideon McGeorge, Shyanne and Peyton Watson, Allyson and Alex Watson, Eli Watson, and Garrett, Cooper, and Hudson Engelberth; one great-great granddaughter, Oakley Watson Adkins; a brother, Bob (Thelma) Chesher and a sister, Patty West, both of New Castle; sisters in law, Kathy Chesher of New Castle and Joy Chesher of Goshen.

In addition to her parents, John and Carry Mae Chesher, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Wood; son, Jim Wood; brothers, Charles, Ralph, David, Jerry and Don Chesher; sisters, Daisy Chesher, Mildred White, Jane McCaslin and Joan Reno.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2020 at Whittier Lane Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Wood Sr. and Pastor Doug Keppel officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery.
