Vera C. Smith, 92, of Hagerstown, died Friday, April 6, 2018 at Addison Place in New Castle, where she had been a resident for nearly two years.
Born May 13, 1925 in Henry County, Vera was the daughter of Ivan and Gladys Chamberlin Dilling. She married Horace N. Smith, of Hagerstown, Nov. 9, 1945; he passed away March 28, 2018. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1943.
She worked at Perfect Circle in Hagerstown after high school. After raising her four sons, she worked as a cook at Welliver’s Smorgasbord in Hagerstown and then at the Hagerstown Elementary School cafeteria.
She was a member of West River Friends Church, Hagerstown Optimist Club, Red Hatters, WCTU and Indiana Farm Bureau. She also assisted Horace in his many mission and church activities.
She enjoyed reading, writing letters to friends and family, her pets and taking care of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also earned her amateur radio operator’s license, W9FYJ, and served as bookkeeper for Smith Communications.
Vera is survived by her four sons, Max (Anne) Smith, Larry (Donna) Smith, LaPorte, Ind., Darrell, Hagerstown, and Steve (Kathy) Smith, Elwood; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Frederick (Lucille) Dilling, New Castle; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Horace; her parents; a great-grandson, Landon Dunham; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Dilling.
Funeral services for Vera will be Sunday, April 15 at 4:30 p.m. at West River Friends Church, 10636 Lacy Road, Economy, where visitation will be 2-4:30 p.m. Pastors Rex Jones and Ben Snyder will officiate.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Hagerstown Optimist Club or Quaker Haven Camp, 111 EMS D16c Lane, Syracuse, IN 46567.
