Harriet L. Burroughs, 87, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Friends Fellowship Community, where she had resided for the past few years.
She was born in Brownsville, TX on October 11, 1930 to Lawrence Franz and Lena Lou (Underhill) Lindley and lived most of her life in the Hagerstown area.
Harriet was a graduate of Hagerstown High School and attended Earlham College. In 1950, she married James Robert Burroughs and he preceded her in death in 2004. She helped organize and, for many years, taught at the Hagerstown Head Start. She also assisted her husband in operating the Jefferson Twp. Trustee’s office. She was a long time member of Nettle Creek Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include two sons, Jay Burroughs of Richmond and Jace Burroughs of Georgia; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Leann Kilmigore of Floyds Knob and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joy Brandenburg in 2001; two sons, Jan and Jon Burroughs; a sister, Betty Lou Riggs, and a brother, Charles Lindley.
Services will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 6, at Nettle Creek church of the Brethren. Pastor Brian Mackie will officiate. Burial will follow in Brick Cemetery. Visitation will be after 10:30 AM, at the church.
Memorials may be made to Adult Day Care of Richmond.
