Members of William O. Frazier Post 333 received a thoughtful tribute ahead of Memorial Day. At its May 18 meeting, the Hagerstown American Legion received a replica of an army base from five Hagerstown Elementary students.
Boys & Girls Club members Cyrus Sankey, Elijah Thompson, Sutton Robertson, Aiden Murphy and Cordell Thompson spent the last month of school constructing the model from recycled materials. Hagerstown art teacher Aimee Foust and Boys & Girls Club Unit Director Dana Whitney encouraged the boys’ imagination to transform water bottles, paper towel rolls, string and straws into a U.S. army base with a helipad, Sherman tank, commander tower and more.
When asked what they planned to do with the model base, Sankey stated they wanted to donate it to the legion.
Accompanied by their families, Foust and Whitney, the boys presented the finished product to legion members, with Cordell saying they “wanted to do something that honored America’s veterans.”
