The Wayne County volleyball tournament was played at Cambridge City Lincoln High School on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Centerville and Northeastern opened play in a battle of Eastern Crossroads Conference members. Both sets were close, with Northeastern winning 2-0 to advance to the championship match.
In the second match Tri-Eastern Conference members Hagerstown and Lincoln played for the right to play Northeastern for the title. Hagerstown swept the match 2-0.

Championship match
Hagerstown and Northeastern played an intense match that went to an overtime set before a winner was determined. Both teams made several errors during the course of the match that could be attributed to adrenaline, nerves and maximum effort.
Volleyball is a game of momentum and initially Northeastern had it.
The first set was tied at 16-16 before the Lady Knights went on a 6-0 run to build a 22-16 lead, and closed the set on a 3-1 run to win easily.
The second set was much different.
The Knights scored first before the Lady Tigers tied the set at 1-1 and again at 2-2. After taking a 3-2 lead they never trailed again. Hagerstown steadily added to their lead. Their 11-point margin of victory was the largest of the day.
With the match tied at one set each, the two teams went to a third set to 15. The Tigers never trailed, building a 12-2 lead and coasting to victory.
Hagerstown head coach Brian Dale said he was proud of his team. “Northeastern’s hitters keep them in matches and they do not quit fighting,” Dale said. “We beat a good team.”
Northeastern head coach Anne Wissel was not available for comment.

The Tigers also won the JV title defeating Northeastern 2-0.
