The Hagerstown Tigers traveled to Winchester on Friday, Jan. 16, for an important Tri-Eastern Conference game. Hagerstown got off to a fast start. Fueled by a 14-point first quarter from Jayke Troutwine, the Tigers led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter. Two second-quarter three-pointers from Kaden Hall helped push the Tigers’ advantage to 33-15 at halftime.
The Falcons, who had only lost to Hagerstown on their own floor three times in the last 35 years, came roaring back in the second half. The Falcons outscored the Tigers 20-8 in the third period and took their first lead of the game at 44-43 when Abram Bogue hit a three-pointer from the wing with 5:20 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The young Tigers clamped down on defense, holding the Falcons to three points for the remainder of the game and looking to their seniors for leadership down the stretch. The Tigers took the lead at 45-44 on a field goal from senior Jonny Howard and up to 47 on a basket from senior Isaac Schmitz. Schmitz iced the 51-46 win with eight seconds to play when he hit two free throws.

Troutwine led the Tigers and all game scorers with 26 points. Hall scored 11 points. Carter Campbell led the Falcons with 14 points and Caleb Hummel scored 13 points.
Hagerstown head coach Tyler Stotler said that historically, the Tigers have not fared well in games played in the historic Winchester Fieldhouse.
“This is a hard place to play,” he said. “Hagerstown has not won here very often in the last 40-50 years. We built a nice lead in the first half, but we need to understand what it takes to close out a win. I am happy for our kids. We needed this win.”
