Parents, tutoring volunteers, youth workers and teachers are invited to learn more about the science of reading and literacy resources through free workshops.

The free sessions take place on Friday, July 11, at Ivy Tech Community College’s Johnson Hall, 2357 Chester Blvd., Richmond.

Participants are encouraged to register at tinyurl.com/h5ajzw6p. While there is no registration deadline, organizers would appreciate as much advance notice as possible for planning.

The day begins with “Unraveling the Reading Rope” from 8-9:30 a.m., which is geared to professionals in the field. Professional development credit is available.

An open house of science of reading resources will be offered from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

It’s followed by an introductory session on the science of reading designed especially for parents, volunteers and youth workers from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Indiana Department of Education is emphasizing the use of best practices and research related to the science of reading in schools. Indiana code defines the science of reading as a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically based research that requires inclusion of phonemic awareness, phonic, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

Coordinating organizations for the event include Ivy Tech and Wayne County’s Every Child Can Read.
