Inspectors discovered 14 critical and 21 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local food establishments.
The violations include the presence of rodents, unsanitary employee practices, dirty equipment and equipment requiring repair, and improper food temperatures.
Establishments are required to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.
Wayne County Health Department employees collected these concerns between Feb. 26-March 7.
Critical violations
- March 7: Way2Go Mart, 1240 N.W. Fifth St., Richmond. Six critical: Establishment does not have a certified food manager. To be corrected by April 29. Hot-holding items (sausage gravy, egg casserole, sausage patties) not held at 135° F. Soiled can opener with food debris, and ice chute at soda machine is heavily soiled with a green, mold-like substance. Spray water bottle in pizza prep area is marked “Enzyme Odor Eliminator.” All were to be corrected immediately. No date mark on “ready-to-eat” pizza sauce container. To be corrected that day. Open employee beverage stored at the food prep table. Corrected. Five noncritical: Packaged “grab and go” food items have no labeling information. Required to list food name, ingredients, net weight, name, and place of business of manufacturer, packer or distributor. To be corrected by March 10. Bag of opened seasoned flour stored on the floor. Boxes of single-service food containers stored on the floor. Mops stored directly on floor, rather than being allowed to air-dry. Food prep area floor soiled with debris. All were to be corrected that day.
- March 4: Arby’s West, 215 National Road W., Richmond. This was a follow-up visit. One critical: Mice droppings on prep counter by bun toaster — prep counter must be cleaned and sanitized immediately. Restaurant is to contact pest company to resolve pest problem that day. Mice droppings under soda stations in dining area and at drive-up window, and under fryer. All to be corrected by March 5. One noncritical: Back door propped open. Corrected during inspection. FOLLOW-UP: March 5: One critical: Mouse droppings under soda station in dining area. To be corrected by March 6. Four noncritical: Back door propped open with trash can. Corrected. Pooling water on floor near ceiling leak. To be corrected by March 19. Dirty ceiling vents near roof leak. To be corrected March 6. Dirt and debris on floors throughout kitchen, drive-thru and office area. To be corrected by March 6. Manager didn’t call or request recommendation from pest company as suggested March 4; March 5 manager completed that during inspection. FOLLOW-UP: March 6: Three items had been corrected (dirt/debris on floor, dirty ceiling vents, leak pooling on floor). Continue cleaning and mitigation for rodent harborage.
- March 4: El Amigo Mexican Food (food truck),1520 N. A St., Richmond. Three critical: Establishment has no employee health policy. To be corrected by March 14. All foods have no date markings. To be corrected that day. Plastic bags used to store food are not food grade quality. Corrected. Two noncritical: Dirty hood vent system. To be corrected by March 14. No hand soap observed at the hand washing sink. To be corrected that day.
- Feb. 28: Lakeview Restaurant, 1219 W. National Road, Cambridge City. One critical: No certified food manager. To be corrected by May 28. Three noncritical: Grill line employee observed without hair restraint. Corrected. Kitchen hand sink is pulling away from the wall and requires repair and re-caulking, and gap observed at bottom of exterior door in dry storage room. Both to be corrected by Feb. 10.
Noncritical violations
- March 5: Boys and Girls Club-Jeffers, 1717 S. L St., Richmond. One noncritical: Handwashing sink requires repair. To be corrected by March 15.
- Feb. 28: Chicago’s Pizza, 109 W. Main St., Cambridge City. One noncritical: No paper towels at handwashing sink by ice machine. Corrected.
- Feb. 27: Belden Wire and Cable Cafeteria, 350 N.W. N St., Richmond. One noncritical: Manual can opener observed with food debris. Corrected.
- Feb. 27: Meijer Express Gas, 2505 Chester Blvd., Richmond. One noncritical: Dirty fan guards in the walk-in cooler. To be corrected by March 9.
- Feb. 26: Super 8 Motel, 2407 N. Centerville Road, Centerville. One noncritical. Ice machine needed cleaning. To be corrected by March 8.
- Feb. 25: Seton West, 801 W. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical: Dish machine registered a temperature of 149.7° Fahrenheit, rather than the required minimum of 180° Fahrenheit. To be corrected by March 7.
Complaint
- Feb. 26: Village Pantry, 319 E. Main St., Centerville. Complaint about outdated foods and drinks. One critical violation. Milk in reach-in cooler was outdated with top crushed and leaking at some point. Discarded.
Follow-ups
- March 4: Comfort Suites, 421 Commerce Road, Richmond. Follow-up on three critical violations from Jan. 9 inspection. One critical repeat issue: No certified food handler at time of inspection. To be corrected by April 4. (Previous issues were date-marking and bleach bottle and rags in hand sink).
- Feb. 28: 1201 Smart LLC, 1201 N. E St., Richmond. No violations. Gap at bottom of door corrected from Feb. 4 inspection.

Inspections
Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice per year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
