Only six establishments were cited for food violations as summer nears its end. Two shared a combined 15 violations, including repeat citations for no hair restraints and holes in the walls near food prep stations.

Violations

  • July 6: Smoothie King, 537 National Road W., Richmond. Seven concerns. Employees did not know about employee health policy or where it was located. Inspector found posted. Female employee observed working with exposed food without hat or hairnet. Corrected on site. Handles of reach-in cooler heavily soiled. Box of 300 32-ounce, single-service cups stored on floor. Corrected on site. Floors and wall above sink in front of store soiled. Mop observed stored in dirty water from night before. Correct both by July 22. Discussed repeat violation for fifth time on hair restraints, as well as letter to owner on repeat violations and hearing on retail food permit. Follow-up inspection on July 22 and Aug. 5 for absence of cutting board. 
  • July 7: Cambridge City Super Market, 100 N. Foote St., Cambridge City. Two concerns. Observed hand sink in veggie prep obstructed with plastic container. Observed nine cans of Enfamil Liquid Infant Formula with the use-by date of 1 June 2026. Both corrected on site. 
  • July 8: Best Western, 533 W. Eaton Pike, Richmond. Two concerns. No stem type thermometer provided at time of inspection. Correct by July 18. Orange juice machine was observed dirty and in need of cleaning. Corrected on site. 
  • July 15: Hartley Hills Golf Club, 201 N. Woodpecker Road, Hagerstown. One concern. Three boxes of single-service items are stored directly on the floor of the kitchen rather than a minimum of 6” above the floor. Corrected on site.
  • July 15: Phillips Family Grill, 231 N. 10th St., Richmond. One concern. Chicken in reach-in cooler was observed with no date mark. Corrected on site.
  • July 16: 1896 Cafe, 23 W. Main St., Hagerstown. Eight concerns. An employee’s beverage was observed in a large-mouth cup. Three wiping cloths were observed stored on counter tops rather than in a container of sanitizer when not in use. Both corrected on site. Scrapper hose, when removed from hook, hangs below the flood rim at 3 bay sink. A box of soda syrup is stored directly on the floor rather than a minimum of 6” above the floor. Vomit and diarrhea cleanup procedures not provided. Employee health policy not provided. Correct by July 30. Wall and floor junctures in the food preparation areas are not covered. Large holes were observed in the walls of the front food preparation areas. The sealed floor in the front food preparation area has worn and is no longer sealed. Correct by Sept. 16.

Have a concern

WCHD inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice a year. Establishments have 10 days after the results of their inspection during which they can make comments or appeal before it becomes available to the public. WCHD officials consider the response step an opportunity for operators to tell the public that they have corrected any violations. Any response submitted by the establishment, along with a response from health inspectors, is included with the inspection form when it becomes public. A Wayne County ordinance requires each establishment to display its previous routine inspection report adjacent to the customer entrance. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
