Richmond’s farmers market is working to ensure residents can purchase fresh, local food, regardless of their financial situation.
Richmond Parks and Recreation has introduced a new initiative at the Richmond Farmers Market, called Bridging the Gap, that gives any SNAP/EBT cardholder up to $40 per weekly to spend at the market.
Cardholders must present a valid ID and their EBT card to participate. Tokens can be used on eligible items and never expire, though the program is limited to 30 participants per market to ensure sustainability.
The benefit is made possible by partnerships with Reid Health and the Urban Enterprise Association.
“The Richmond Farmers Market is more than just a place to shop—it’s a place where our community connects and supports one another,” said Parks Superintendent Denise Retz in a news release. “With the Bridging the Gap program, we’re working to make sure that no one loses access to healthy, local food options during these uncertain times.”
For years, the Richmond Farmers Market has offered SNAP participants the chance to double their benefits through Reid Health’s Community Engagement program. The new initiative builds on that success by providing additional support to those facing financial strain.
The Richmond Farmers Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the Starr Gennett Building, 101 S. First St. in the gorge. More information about the market and its food access programs is available by calling 765-983-7275 or visiting richmondindiana.gov.
