East Germantown is still looking for a new clerk-treasurer.
The person previously in that role, Carleene Collins, resigned from the elected position on Oct. 1. Because Collins had run for election as a Democrat, the Wayne County Democratic Party was given 30 days to fill the position for the remainder of Collins’ term.
According to Wayne County Clerk Tara Pegg, the party was unable to find someone in that time and the role remains open.
Now, East Germantown’s town council will choose the replacement. Indiana law says the body must hold a regular or special meeting within 30 days of when the county clerk notified the council that the position could not be filled by the WCDP. The council can choose anyone qualified to hold the office — they must be a resident of and registered voter in East Germantown — regardless of political affiliation.
If the council can’t find someone, state law says it can appoint one of its own members to assume those duties, without additional compensation, for the remainder of Collins’ term. It may also contract with a certified public accountant or other government bodies, and if none of that works out, eventually it could hire someone as a regular employee to fulfill those duties for the remainder of the term.
Former Milton clerk Terry Craig told WWN that he is handling clerk-treasurer duties for the town on an interim basis. Craig said that the town is accepting applications, which can be left at the town building drop box, through Dec. 2. He said the town board will hold an executive session on Dec. 3 to review the applications, and a public meeting on Monday, Dec. 8 to take action.
Anyone interested in the role or with questions can contact the East Germantown town hall at 765-478-9052 or the Wayne County Clerk’s office at 765-973-9220.
