The Richmond baseball team made a trip to Selma on Friday, April 3, for a game against perennial 2A power Wapahani. For the Raiders, ranked sixth in the preseason 2A poll, it was their season opener, while Richmond was playing their third game in three days.

Brian J. Dudley Field is one of the most scenic and beautiful high school baseball fields in all of Indiana, but it does not have lights. On an overcast night, that had a direct impact on the outcome of the game.

Wapahani scored a first-inning run when Eli Andrews hammered a one-out standup triple and scored on a Quentine James sacrifice fly.

Richmond fought back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. Darwyn Roman drew a walk and Cameron Rodriquez and Weston Jones followed with back-to-back RBI hits.

The Raiders responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. An RBI double from Andrews and a two-run home run from James were the key hits.

The Red Devils tied the score at 4-4 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Raiders broke the tie with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

Richmond erupted for five runs in the top half of the seventh inning. Roman singled and later scored. Rodriquez walked and later scored. Jones singled and later scored, Logan Belanga walked and later scored on a wild pitch, and Rodriquez hit a double to complete the scoring, giving the Red Devils a 9-5 lead with three outs to go.

The Raiders scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and were threatening more when the umpire declared the game over because it was too dark to finish. The game reverted back to the last complete inning, knocking out all seventh-inning statistics and giving the Raiders a 5-4 win.

Kyle Anderson was the winning pitcher for the Raiders. Tyrel Brown started the game on the mound for Richmond. Jamason Hall and Malachi Moore worked in relief with Moore taking the loss.

Richmond head coach Mike Medley said he was proud of his players. “They battled to the end and stayed positive,” he said. “They did everything we asked them to do, but Mother Nature was not on our side.”
