Richmond Community Orchestra will perform a medley of music at its early spring concert on Sunday, March 10.
The performance begins at 3:30 p.m. in Goddard Auditorium in Earlham College’s Carpenter Hall, 801 National Road W., Richmond.
Musicians have been rehearsing works including “Sleeping Beauty Waltz” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky; “Joyeuse March” by Emmanuel Chabrier; “Scherzo” from Symphony No. 4 by Anton Bruckner; “Pavane” by Gabriel Faure; “Russian Easter Overture” by**** Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and “Pines of Rome” by Ottorino Respighi.
RCO also plans to perform a work by its music director, Jay Conard of Preble County, Ohio, called “The Depot.” The piece pays tribute to Richmond’s historic depot on North E Street.
Admission is free; donation jars will be available afterward if patrons would like to help the all-volunteer orchestra with its expenses.
RCO’s musicians range from high schoolers to retirees in Wayne, Preble, Darke and Union counties. Some have taught music and others work in careers including medicine, dentistry and information technology.
In addition to several performances for area residents each year, RCO provides group violin lessons and instrument rentals to local children at no charge. This year’s partner organizations for lessons are Girls Inc. of Wayne County and Preble Arts in Eaton, Ohio.
The idea for the orchestra developed in Fall 2008 when musicians playing for a Richmond Civic Theatre production wondered if they could get together more often to rehearse and perform a variety of music.
