A mom who’s passionate about helping children’s development now has the opportunity to open a day care.

Sarah and Edison Perdomo purchased the house at 528 S. 14th St. in Richmond specifically for the day care, and during an Aug. 13 meeting, the Richmond Board of Zoning Appeals granted the Perdomos a variance of use that permits the day care in high-density, single-family zoning.

“I like to watch them grow,” said Sarah Perdomo about children, including the Perdomos’ 2-year-old daughter.

The day care would be open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. with two shifts that fit multiple work schedules. It would start with a maximum of 12 children per shift, with plans to increase to 16 children per shift.

The home has a fenced-in backyard and a pull-off area along its South F Street side for dropping off and picking up children. The Perdomos plan to have patio doors installed to make accessing the backyard easier.

Edison Perdomo said that Sarah has provided their daughter an educational foundation and would do the same for other children. Day care centers that supply such an environment are expensive, he said.

“If you look at the community we’re targeting, which is everyone, it’s really inaccessible from the standpoint of finance, so this is creating an opportunity for people [with] low income, people of Richmond, to send their children and know their child is going to get a good foundation of education,” he said.

Board members voted 4-0 to grant the variance.

Display pool proposal sunk

The board did not vote favorably on a variance of development standards that would have permitted Richmond Pools and Spas to display a pool outside the business at 800 N.W. Fifth St. The variance was defeated 4-0.

Ken Taromino of Taromino Properties returned Aug. 13 after making changes from his July presentation. At that time, the pool was planned for the south side of the business’s building, but Taromino moved it to the north side.

Still, safety concerns about a pool tempting neighbors and passersby during off hours and the flow of traffic through the business’s parking lot led to the negative vote.
