A Randolph County family’s business that builds miniature barns plans to expand into Wayne County because of a marriage.
Leroy Glick told the Wayne County Board of Zoning Appeals during its March 12 meeting that his son will assume part of the family business after marrying and moving to 6359 Arba Pike, north of Richmond. Glick said chicken coops are a primary product in Randolph County, and his son will mostly make horse barns.
The business will not require additional buildings on the 40-acre lot, which will also be farmed. Completed buildings will be trucked to customers.
Glick needed a variance of use for the business on the agriculturally zoned property and a special exception to have a 16-square-foot business sign. The board unanimously approved both requests.
David King’s trailer repair business has grown enough during the past seven years that he returned to the board requesting amendments to commitments associated with a variance of use granted in 2019. DK Welding and Trailer Repair is at 3441 Sowers Road southeast of Greens Fork.
King desires an 80-foot-by-100-foot shop addition and a 29-foot-by-61-foot addition to serve as a showroom and sales point for parts he manufactures. He also would like to become a trailer dealer.
King said the new shop enables pulling trailers straight from Sowers Road into the shop rather than making a difficult turn into the existing shop.
The board granted King’s amendments with a 3-1 vote. Danny Phelps voted against after noting the family business had grown into an enterprise and that the manufacturing and sales in an agriculturally zoned area is “a very big thing to me.”
