The Centerville football team fell to host Greensburg on Friday, Oct. 23, in its postseason play opener against the Pirates.
The Bulldogs are members of the Eastern Crossroads Conference. The Pirates are members of the Eastern Indiana Conference (small school division).
It was a back-and-forth game through three quarters but that changed in the fourth quarter.
The Pirates scored on the first play from scrimmage to take an early 6-0 lead, but the Centerville defense blocked the PAT kick attempt and went on a drive capped off by a Jace Hollendonner keeper and then added the PAT to take a 7-6 lead. The Pirates answered with two quick scores. After going up 13-7, the Pirates intercepted a pass and scored again. Their two-point conversion attempt was good and extended their lead to 21-7.
The Bulldogs got a 31-yard field goal from Gage Logan and then forced a Pirate punt to get the ball back. Hollendonner connected with Kyle Dickenson for a touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone to cut the Bulldogs’ deficit to 21-17 at halftime.
Centerville scored the first 10 points of the second half to build a 27-21 lead late in the third quarter, but they could not hold off a furious Pirate rally.
The Pirates reclaimed a 29-27 lead late in the third quarter on a touchdown and two-point conversion, then outscored Centerville 20-0 in the fourth quarter to take a 49-27 win that ended Centerville’s season.
It was the final game in a Centerville football uniform for Bulldog seniors Bryson Brown, Dickenson, Karder McCord, Austyn McGuire, Sawyer Murray, Cohen Pierce, Davis Pentecost, Landen Schlotterbeck and Hunter Sonntag.
Individual statistics were unavailable for either team.
