The Indiana Department of Transportation stopped traffic across Richmond’s U.S. 27 bridge in spring 2023.
Early next year, INDOT expects traffic to again flow across a new bridge. Crews are completing roadway tie-ins before the reopening, according to a news release.
The bridge was expected to open this year; however, railroad coordination and supply issues caused delays. The project needed more than 2 million pounds of structural steel girders for the seven-span bridge.
Work will continue until summer of 2025 to complete sidewalk work, final grading, permanent seeding and aesthetic details.
The project completely replaced the deteriorating bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad and local streets. It addressed safety issues with pier columns in streets and upgraded pedestrian facilities that are Americans with Disabilities Act compliant.
