Improving area bikeways will be discussed at Bike & Walk Wayne County’s planning meeting this May. It is one of many events the biking advocacy group will host for National Bike Month.
Thursday, May 21, at 10 a.m., the group will introduce a plan for a more integrated network of on-street bicycle routes for the city of Richmond. Discussion and feedback is welcomed. Bike & Walk’s Barry Cramer will lead the meeting. Cramer previously served on Richmond’s Advisory Committee for Bicycle/Pedestrian Master Plan a little over a decade ago.
The meeting will also feature Indianapolis nonprofit Nine13 Sports to preview its youth programs. “Kids on Bikes” integrates bicycling into physical education classes, and “Kids Building Bikes” lets older elementary students assist in building bikes that they then keep.
At noon, attendees can enjoy a biking tour led by long-time bicycling advocate Stu Milligan. The tour will showcase the east side of Richmond’s existing bicycling assets, liabilities and opportunities for development. Participants may enjoy lunch or dinner with the group.
The meeting will be held at the Sally Hutton Community Room in the Richmond Municipal Building, 50 N. Fifth Street. Doughnuts and coffee will be served prior at 9 a.m.
On Saturday, May 23, Hayes Arboretum hosts a bike safety event from 1-3 p.m. In partnership with Reid Health Community Health, participants can learn bike safety amongst Hayes’s bike trails. First-comers will receive free biking gear.
Outside of Wayne County, Indiana’s Walk and Bike Summit will take place on May 5 and 6 in Indianapolis. For details on all events, email Cramer at barrycramer7@gmail.com and Milligan at stu@bikeinrichmond.org.
