Kathleen K. (Kimes) Smith, 69, of Elwood, passed away July 26, 2022, in her home, with her family by her side. She was born, April 27, 1953, the daughter of Leonard and Joyce (Stitt) Kimes.
Kathy was a 1971 graduate of Madison Grant High School (the first class to graduate from MGHS) and a graduate of Marion Business College. On August 24, 1974, she married the love of her life, Steven E. Smith, and began to fulfill her lifelong pursuit of being a wife, homemaker, and mother. They are the proud parents of three children and nine grandchildren.
Kathy was a strong woman of faith who actively served at her church, Liberty Friends. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and volunteering… but, above all else, she loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Kathy was committed to her family and made them a priority in her life. She took the time to create a special and unique bond with each grandchild. She’d often remind her children that “what happens at Grandma’s house, stays at Grandma’s house” and, of course, ice cream (with sprinkles) and chocolate milk was something that always happened at Grandma’s house.
In 2009, Kathy began serving as a volunteer at the Helping Hands organization, in Fairmount. She spent countless hours sorting donations, organizing the store, interacting with customers, and helping families in need. She built meaningful friendships during her time there and was proud to be a part of their mission.
Kathy is survived by her children, Amy (Brandon) Dennis, Renee (Harlon) Dunham and Kyle (Kristin) Smith; grandchildren, Hannah (Jack Garner), Ethan and Caleb Dennis, Naomi Haynes, Lucy and Sydney Dunham, and Grace, Ephraim and Quentin Smith; mother, Joyce Kimes; sisters, Bonnie (Tim) Small, Lori (Mike) LaShure and Lynell (Dale) Coverdale.
Kathy is proceeded in death by her beloved husband, Steven E. Smith; father, Leonard Kimes; grandson, Landon Dunham, and an angel baby grandchild.
