MOORESVILLE, North Carolina – Cora L. Rains, age 93, of Mooresville, died Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at Autumn Care of Cornelius, North Carolina.
Born February 26, 1923, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Andrew and Mary Hubbard Gill, Cora graduated from Hamilton High School in 1941. She lived in Abington and Richmond, Indiana and was employed by INA Insurance in Richmond for many years. In 1962, Cora and her husband purchased the Abington General Store and operated the grocery/gas station from 1965 until the 1980s. While living in Abington, she was active in the Abington Fire Department Auxiliary and the Willing Workers Ministry of the Abington Christian Church. Cora attended Hillcrest Baptist Church prior to moving to North Carolina in 2015, where she was a resident of Brookdale Churchill of Mooresville.
Survivors include her son, Gary (Judy) Rains of Mooresville, North Carolina; daughter, Beverly (John) Menken of Rockford, Illinois; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Ova L. Rains; parents; sisters, Bessie Watson and Mary Lou Barnett Prewitt; and brothers, Charles and Luther Gill.
Visitation for Cora L. Rains will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor Martin Holman officiating. Burial will be in Abington Cemetery.
