Edwin R. Carpenter, a resident of Economy, Indiana, passed away on Friday August 6, 2021 at the home of his son David, in Pleasant Garden, NC. He graduated from Economy High School, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force with his brother James. While in the Air Force, he attained the rank of Staff Sargent. He received the National Defense Service medal and the Occupational Medal in Germany. Upon his discharge from the USAF, he returned to Economy, and joined the Economy Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for 73 years (38 years as Fire Chief). He was also a member of the Wayne County Firemen’s Association, where he served as President, as well as various other positions. He retired after 35 years at Dana Corporation, Perfect Circle Sleeve Casting Division in Richmond. He went on to work at the Economy Implement and Equipment Company. After leaving there, for many years, he could be found at the farm of Terry and Susie Wilson. During his life he served as Assistant Scout Master for Troop 3 in Hagerstown, IN. For years, he was a member of the Wayne County Tractor Pullers Association, a member of the VFW Harold Buck Memorial Post 4254 Bonita Springs FL, and when in Naples, FL, he also volunteered at Big Cork Screw Island Fire and Rescue District.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beverly J. Carpenter and his brother James P. Carpenter. Survivors include his son and wife, David and Karla Carpenter of Pleasant Garden, NC; son and wife Scott and Becky Carpenter of Naples, FL Grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah and Andrew Carpenter; and great grandchildren Bexlee, Ella, Samuel, and Lizzy. Also surviving is his sister, Lucille Crawford of Prescot, AZ and Sister-in-law, Marlene Carpenter of Port Clinton, OH.
Visitation will be at the Economy United Methodist Church on Wednesday, August 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The Memorial Service will be Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 10:00 AM, with internment following at the Brethren Cemetery in Arcadia, IN. Contributions can be made in his name to Economy United Methodist Church, Economy Volunteer Fire Department, or the VFW Harold Buck Memorial Post 4254 Bonita Springs FL, Veterans Relief Fund.
