Robert Clinton Chilton, 98, of New Castle passed away on Thursday, June 24, 2021.

He was born on June 4, 1923 in Tennessee, a son of the late John Wesley and Effie Elizabeth (Maynard) Chilton.

Robert married Mildred Craig on May 22, 1945 in New Castle. He worked for Chrysler Corporation for over 30 years before retiring. Robert enjoyed coon hunting, playing music on his guitar and banjo, listening to bluegrass music and attending Greensboro Nazarene Church. Robert loved to work outside and was known for his vegetable garden. He was a kind man and treated others as he would want to be treated.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 76 years, Mildred Chilton; children, Ann (Mike) Bergin of New Castle, Judy Cross of New Castle and Carolyn McCormick (Danny) of California; grandchildren, Robert (Emily) Cross, Dianna Marlow, Kevin Jeffries and Todd (Cheryl) Bergin; great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Ortel, Seth Cross, Nicholas Cross, Tanner Engel, Jake Bergin, Joe Bergin, Zack Bergin, Gavin Jefferies and Lauren Cupp; great-great- grandson, Kobe Cross and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Lester Chilton, Alma Fickle, Coleen Hill, John “Pete” Chilton; son-in-law, William Arnold Cross and a grandson-in-law, Jessie Marlow.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Sproles Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery West Lawn Addition.

Friends may call from 11 – 2 pm, prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday.
