Robert Eugene Johnson, Sr. (a.k.a.- Bob, Bobby Gene, BJ), born April 9, 1937, passed away at the age of 83 in the early hours Wednesday morning Dec. 2, 2020, leaving his last surviving sibling Irene Jett (William Sr.), his spouse Mary L. Johnson, his 5 children, Teresa (Doug) Maney, Burlington, KY., Anthony (Sheila) Johnson, Greensfork, IN., Monique (Wigberto) Burgos, Charlotte, N.C., Robert Johnson, Jr., and Jeffery (Sarah) Johnson, Burlington, KY., and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents John H. Johnson, Sr. and Marie Johnson, his siblings John H. Jr., Joe, and Veanna.
Bob was a retired firefighter where he dedicated over 25-years as a first responder serving his community. He played fullback for Richmond H.S. where he assisted the team in maintaining an undefeated season. He and the team went on to become 1956 State Champions. Bob also coached and mentored many local youth through volunteering at the local community centers in Richmond. Bob was a member and faithfully served as Treasurer, as President of the Laymen’s Organization, and served on the Usher Board at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Bob also served as a Mason with Masonic Temple for many years. Bob owned and operated BJ’s Auto Sales and Detailing and ended his career working in multiple auto dealerships around the city. Robert E. Johnson, Sr. was a father, a leader, a coach, a mentor, a friend and a hero to many. May he rest in heaven.
Funeral services will be held at Community Family Funeral Home on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Kenneth Christmon officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home Saturday two hours prior to the service. Masks and social distancing are required. Burial will be private and held at a later date.
