James P. “Jim” Lane Sr., age 83, of Hagerstown, Indiana, died Monday, April 6, 2020, at his home.
Born May 1, 1936, in Richmond, Indiana, to Jacob Lester and Edith Mildred Freeman Lane, Jim was a life-long resident of Wayne County, Indiana. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1957. Jim retired from Dana Corporation, where he worked as a tool cutter, and previously worked at Fireproof Door, Fountain City Grain Elevator, and WCB Construction. However, his favorite job of all was working as a greenskeeper at Hartley Hills Golf Club in Hagerstown and Winding Branch Golf Course in Cambridge City, Indiana. Jim was a member of American Legion Post 333 in Hagerstown and UAW Local 279. He enjoyed gardening, camping, and raising cattle. Jim loved traveling around the world.
Survivors include his children, Patrick Lane of Richmond, Leslie Lane of Greens Fork, Indiana, Cheryl Smileski, all of Hagerstown, Sue (Fred) Scott of Richmond, and Malinda (Doug Wesley) Lane and Walter Lane, both of Hagerstown; six grandchildren, Aaron, Erika, Diane, Larissa, Elora, and Michael; three great-grandchildren, Carly, Christian, and Aiden; nieces; nephews; and many friends, including his Marine brother, Alan Staker of Ogden, Utah.
He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, MaryAnne Burgess Lane, who died August 20, 2010; grandson, Ian; parents; and sisters, Anna and Patricia.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, we regret to inform you that services for James P. “Jim” Lane Sr. will be private. Private graveside service will be at Elkhorn Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
