Reid Health has three challengers to provide Wayne County with ambulance service.

Wayne County’s commissioners opened proposals from the four providers during their Sept. 30 meeting. In addition to Reid, Heartland Ambulance Service, Seals Ambulance and AmeriPro Health submitted proposals.

No proposal details were made available. A county committee will evaluate the proposals and make a recommendation to commissioners.

Reid has provided ambulance service for eight years. From 2019-2021, Reid served southwestern Wayne County, with Red Line EMS and Culberson serving other parts of the county. Commissioners awarded Reid a five-year contract to cover all three service areas beginning Jan. 1, 2022. The county paid Reid $285,000 each of the first three years, $304,950 the fourth year and $313,500 this year.

Officer retires

Major Alan Moore requested commissioners approve the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office providing Capt. Doug Coffin with his service firearm as he retires after 44 years. County policy permits a retiring officer to receive their firearm at no cost after 20 years of service.

Moore said Coffin maintained his dedication through his last day and has been “a fantastic asset” to the department.

“I’m proud to have worked with him,” Moore said.

Commissioner Brad Dwenger said Coffin brought energy and a chipper attitude to his work.

“He will be greatly missed by the county,” Dwenger said. “He’s been a staple for the sheriff’s department.”

Commissioners approved the request.

Working hours

Kim Clauser, the county’s human resources director, reported to commissioners about a variety of working hours among county departments.

Departments located in the Wayne County Administration Building are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The county handbook sets office hours lasting until 5 p.m.

Commissioners asked Clauser to survey departments about their hours as commissioners are planning to discuss establishing consistent hours during October’s meeting with department heads and elected officials.

Bridge projects

Commissioners voted to accept the Heiney Road bridge that was completed last year. Brandon Sanders, the county engineer, said a year’s wait was required because of a tree warranty.

Sanders said the deck overlay will soon be installed at the two Richmond Avenue bridges being reconstructed. The road project remains on track for completion later this month or in early November.
