The Hagerstown football team dominated the Union City Indians in a Tri-Eastern Conference game on Friday, Sept. 4, before a large crowd.
One of the biggest achievements of the night was arguably the ability of the school and community to bring the field up to playable condition. The Cory Athletic complex, including Mark Childs Field and the Lacy Building, were completely under water on Aug. 12, due to torrential rains and subsequent flooding. The work of literally dozens of coaches, other school employees, athletes and volunteers from the community brought the facility back to life in time for the first home football game.
The Tigers dominated the game on both sides of the ball from the opening kick. The aggressive Tigers scored 34 points in the first quarter and added 20 points in the second quarter to build a 54-0 lead at halftime and trigger a running clock in the second half.
Tiger junior Graham Vinson threw four TD passes in the first half to four different receivers, completing 6-7 passes for 136 yards before sitting out the second half.
Vinson said that the Tigers accomplished what they set out to do. “We wanted to keep it on the ground, keep our play clean, look good and have fun,” Vinson said. “Our young guys had the opportunity to play the second half and gain experience.”
Second-half scoring slowed but the reserves came in and played well, extending the Tiger lead to 61-0 on a 33-yard TD pass from Arlin Berger to Jonah Hale late in the third quarter. The Indians averted a shutout when Jalen Claywell picked up a fumble and ran 46 yards on a scoop and score with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.
The Hagerstown offense was very balanced. The Tigers gained 362 yards with 182 coming through the air and 180 on the ground. Fletcher Callahan, Jonah Hale, Jaxon Hale, Keith Lumpkin, Keegan Rue and Nick Tinkle all scored touchdowns. Cooper Porter scored a touchdown and scored on a two-point conversion, Mason Hunt scored two touchdowns and Calvin Delgas added five PAT kicks. Hunt was the leading ground gainer, picking up 91 yards on six carries. Brody Benson gained 35 yards on seven carries.
Hagerstown head coach Scott Snodgrass was happy with his team’s play. “We wanted to play as many kids as possible tonight so we could get them on film,” Snodgrass said. “We can use that film for teaching. We can now use it to show the players what they did well and what they need to improve on. We focused on ourselves this week and improving fundamentals. We did not spend a lot of time talking about Union City. Overall, I thought we did a great job and we got a lot of young players game experience. I was also pleased with our kicker (Calvin Delgas) in his debut tonight.”

Titans roll over Eagles 50-0 in TEC game
The visiting Tri High Titans shut out the young Lincoln football team in a Tri-Eastern Conference game on Friday, Sept. 4. The start time for the game was moved back to 8 p.m. to avoid a conflict with a local benefit concert and to allow the temperature to cool down.
The time delay did nothing to cool down the Titan offense.
The Titans scored 27 points in the first quarter and tacked on 20 more points in the second quarter to build a 47-0 halftime lead, which triggered a running clock in the second half. The Titans added a fourth-quarter field goal to complete the scoring.
Masyn Chalfant ran for 107 yards and three TDs in only six carries and also caught a touchdown pass to lead the Titans’ offense.
With the win, the Titans maintained a tie for the Tri-Eastern Conference lead with Hagerstown as the only teams without a loss in league play.
It was a difficult night for the Eagles. They were unable to complete a pass and they lost yards rushing as a team, Only Ryan Riggs, who gained seven yards on 12 carries, had positive yardage. One bright spot was provided by Ben Golliher who had four kick-off returns totaling 70 yards. Defensive statistics were not available.

Red Devils pick up 1st win
The Richmond football team went on the road for the third consecutive week on Friday, Sept. 4, picking up its first win on the season for head coach Ronnie Hibbler in a nonconference game with Indianapolis Crispus Attucks.
The game was played at Broad Ripple High School and was the first meeting between the schools.
The Red Devils dialed up their game after the halftime intermission, breaking from a 6-6 halftime tie, to outscore the Tigers 18-2 in the second half of play.
The Red Devils used a three-pronged quarterback attack and a balanced offense in their win. Adaiah Belcher threw for 68 yards and a TD, Kyren Rogers threw for 58 yards and a TD, and Thomas Stargell threw for 23 yards. Daniel Gammage rushed for 37 yards on 13 carries.
Tyziyah Stubbs caught five passes for 39 yards and a TD, Syn’cere Russell caught two passes for 35 yards and a TD, Elias Sabree caught two passes for 38 yards, and Stargell hauled in a 21-yard TD pass. Isaiah Delucio scored for the defense when he recovered a fumble in the end zone.
Kylin Cooper led the Red Devils with nine tackles; Maurice Hibbler had eight.
