Nearly 30 sporting events were scheduled last week, yet all but three were canceled because of torrential rains that led to catastrophic flooding.

Sporting events immediately took a backseat to rescue efforts and damage control in the impacted communities. Many roads became impassable, which would have made travel to sporting events in some cases life threatening.

After the rain receded, preliminary reports were that the football facilities at Cambridge City Lincoln, Centerville, Northeastern and Richmond would likely be in playable condition for regular-season games, which start on Friday, Aug. 21.

The scrimmage scheduled between Richmond and Jay County played at Jay County on Friday, Aug. 14, was unchanged.

The football scrimmage between Hagerstown and Eastern Hancock, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 14, was canceled.

Northeastern was scheduled to participate in a jamboree at North Decatur High School along with Tri High on Friday, Aug. 14. The jamboree was moved from North Decatur to the campus of Earlham College.

Centerville was scheduled to play a scrimmage at Adams Central on Friday, Aug. 14. The scrimmage was rescheduled to Saturday, Aug. 15, at South Adams High School.

Lincoln was scheduled to participate in a jamboree at Union City on Friday, Aug. 14. The jamboree was moved to Saturday, Aug. 15, at Eastbrook High School and was later canceled.

The Hagerstown facilities and playing field were the most impacted. The locker rooms and equipment storage facilities were completely underwater. The situation is currently being evaluated to see what, if anything, is salvageable, and leaders are finding a suitable practice facility.

Fortunately, the first two regular-season games for the Tigers are on the road.

The Tigers are scheduled to play at Knightstown on Friday, Aug. 21, and at Centerville on Friday, Aug. 28.

More information is forthcoming.
