August “Gus” Golliher from Hagerstown High School, who entered the event with a season record of 40-9, wrestled Thomas Gibbs from Brownsburg High School in his opening State Finals match. Gibbs won the match over Golliher by pin and went on to finish state runner-up.
Gibbs was the state champion in the 144-pound weight class last season before moving up to the 150-pound weight class this season.
The state finals in wrestling is a two-day event held in Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The ceremonies kicked off Friday, Feb. 20, with a parade of champions, and the opening round began at 3 p.m.
To advance to the second day for the top eight finishers, a participating wrestler must win the opening-round match.
