The Connersville Spartans hosted their annual Spartan Classic on Friday, Dec. 27, and Saturday, Dec. 28. The event is one of the most prestigious in the state, with 38 schools in the loaded field. Hagerstown, Northeastern and Richmond were all represented.
Only three Wayne County wrestlers made it to the podium by finishing in the top eight.
Caleb Cohee (13-6) (Northeastern) finished eighth in the 190-pound weight class and Roy Thornbury (21-5) (Hagerstown) was the runner-up in the 175-pound weight class, losing to Xavier Smith (27-3) (Fishers) in the title match.
Heather Crull (19-0) (Northeastern) was the champion in the 106-pound weight class. Crull defeated unbeaten Joey Warner (27-1) (Fort Wayne Carroll) in a 6-0 decision for her third career victory at the Spartan Classic, an extreme rarity.
Wrestling at 150 pounds, Zach Golliher from Hagerstown fell just short of a final eight finish, but he won his first two matches to reach the 100-win plateau for his career.
Fishers was the team champion with 241 points, slipping past runner-up Greenfield-Central with scored 236.5 points. Northeastern finished 21st with 90.5 points, Hagerstown finished 27th with 70.5 points and Richmond finished 34th with 44.5 points.
