Inspectors discovered six critical and 16 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local food establishments.

The violations ranged from unwarmed cheese sauce to a pressurized hose requiring additional equipment.

Establishments are required to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.

Wayne County Health Department employees collected these concerns between Sept. 17-27.

Critical violations

  • Sept. 18: Village Pantry: 1240 N.W. 5th St., Richmond. One critical: Jalapeño cheese sauce (hot) held in pump container measured 103.8 degrees Fahrenheit rather than 135 degrees Fahrenheit or above. Unit was not plugged in. To be corrected by Sept. 18.
  • Sept. 20: Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine, 4712 National Road E., Richmond. Two critical: Wooden boards used for shelving on food cart in the walk-in cooler; Spray bottles containing a pink cleaning solution, stored at warewashing and scrub sink, not labeled as to their contents. Both to be corrected by Sept. 20.
  • Sept. 27: El Rodeo, 3611 E. Main St., Richmond. Two critical: Ice scoop handle touching ice in bar area; Sanitizer bottle not properly labeled. Scoop corrected during inspection. Sanitizer to be corrected that day.
  • Sept. 27: Kroger, 3701 National Road E., Richmond. One critical: Spray hose located in rear storage area placed within service sink under pressure. Hose requires additional back siphonage device, such as a hose bib. To be corrected by Oct. 7.

Noncritical violations

  • Sept. 17: Comfort Suites, 421 Commerce Road, Richmond. One noncritical: Sanitizer test strips not available at time of inspection. To be corrected by Sept. 27.
  • Sept. 17: McDonald’s, 400 Commerce Road, Richmond. Two noncritical: Food/soda syrup residue on floor under syrup boxes in back area of establishment; Employee observed working without hair restraint near exposed food. Both: Corrected during inspection. 
  • Sept. 18: Bismark Donuts, 1241 N.W. 5th St., Richmond. One noncritical: Soiled wall and undershelving at panini press. To be corrected by Oct. 2.
  • Sept. 18: Speedway: 126 S.W. 5th St., Richmond. One noncritical: Dirty ceiling vents and fan guards. To be corrected by Sept. 28.
  • Sept. 18: Victor’s Mexican Taqueria and Grill, 1304 N.W. 5th St., Richmond. Four noncritical: Gasket for ice-maker torn/must be replaced; Ceiling and south wall in warewashing area are not covered/sealed to make them nonabsorbent and easily cleanable; Rear delivery door not self-closing; Three damp wiping cloths on counters when not in use, rather than in containers of sanitizer. Cloths to be corrected that day, all to be corrected by Oct. 18.
  • Sept. 18: Village Pantry: 1240 N.W. 5th St., Richmond. One noncritical: Paper towels not observed at kitchen hand sink. To be corrected Sept. 18. 
  • Sept. 19: No. 9 Grill, 27 W. Main St., Cambridge City. One noncritical: Observed employee working without hair restraint near exposed food. Corrected during inspection.
  • Sep 20: Gulzar’s Indian Cuisine, 4712 National Road E., Richmond. Two noncritical: Screening is torn at rear delivery door. To be corrected Oct. 14. Heavily soiled ceiling within walk-in cooler. To be corrected Sept. 30.
  • Sept. 26: Cafe Neo, 1598 N. Indiana 1, Bldg. A, Cambridge City. One noncritical:  No thermometer in reach-in cooler used for milk and creamers at front of store. To be corrected by Oct. 3.
  • Sept. 26: Speedway, 1589 N. Indiana 1, Cambridge City. One noncritical: No thermometer in reach-in cooler in storage room at back of store. To be corrected by Oct. 3.
  • Sept. 27: El Rodeo, 3611 E. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical: Mop room ceiling dirty. To be corrected that day.
  • Sept. 27: Kroger, 3701 National Road E., Richmond. One noncritical: Soiled ceiling fans in meat department walk-in coolers. To be corrected by Oct. 27.

(Box) Inspections

Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice per year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
