Restaurant dinged again for dirty can opener

Inspectors discovered two critical and 13 noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local food establishments.

The violations ranged from too-warm lunch meat to a cracked foundation that’s allowing soil and gravel to leak into a kitchen.

Establishments are required to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.

Wayne County Health Department employees collected those concerns between Aug. 11-30.

Critical violations

• Aug. 20: Hot Head Burritos, 1006 Chester Blvd., Richmond. One critical (repeat issue). Manual can opener needs cleaning; food residue was on blade and handle. Corrected during inspection.  
• Aug. 12: Jimmy John’s, 3413 E. Main St., Richmond. One critical, one noncritical. Critical: Packages of lunch meat in front reach-in cooler measured 42.5 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 41 or below. Discarded. Noncritical: Two employees preparing food don’t have beards restrained. To be corrected by Aug. 13. 

Noncritical violations

• Aug. 30: Maria Mitrione’s Italian Market, 923 N. E St., Richmond. One noncritical. Hand sink was dripping when turned on and needed repair. To be corrected by Sept. 10. 
• Aug. 27: CVS/pharmacy, 298 S.W. 18th St., Richmond. One noncritical. Fan guards in dairy, tea, juice, water and soda coolers needed cleaning. To be corrected by Sept. 7. 
• Aug. 26: Lee’s Famous Recipe, 1801 E. Main St., Richmond. One noncritical. No test kit available. To be corrected in three days. 
• Aug. 21: Richmond Food Mart I (BP), 2319 National Road W., Richmond. One noncritical. Eight packages of bottled water in front and three boxes of soda syrup in rear of store were stored directly on floor rather than at least 6 inches above floor. To be corrected that day. 
• Aug. 15: Legends Southside Bar, 401 S. Fifth St., Richmond. One noncritical. Walls behind pizza oven needed cleaning. To be corrected by Aug. 25.
• Aug. 14: Wendy’s, 2324 Chester Blvd., Richmond. Three noncriticals. Outside trash bin lids were observed open. No paper towels at hand sink. Both corrected. Ceiling vents in back dry goods storage needed cleaning. To be corrected by Aug. 24. 
• Aug. 14: Earlham College Hall Cafeteria, 801 National Road W., Richmond. Two noncriticals. Manual can opener observed with food residue and was corrected during inspection. Facility in need of repair; north wall in bakers’ food prep area is falling; foundation is cracked allowing outside wall to leak soil and pea gravel into kitchen area. To be corrected in 90 days; WCHD should receive monthly updates on progress.  

OK to open

• Aug. 15: Richmond Community Schools’ Tiernan Center Concessions. Pre-operational visit took place Aug. 13. 
• Aug. 13: Phillips Family Grill, 231 N. 10th St., Richmond. OK to open pending approval of all agencies. No violations during Aug. 22 routine inspection.  

Complaints investigated

• Aug. 29: McDonald’s, 2320 Chester Blvd., Richmond. Complaint about hand-washing. Discussed with manager. No violations found.
• Aug. 12: Mack’s Place, 719 S. F St., Richmond. Complaint about hot water. No issues found. No violations found at time of inspection.

Follow-ups

• Aug. 18: Generations Grill & Sports Bar, 1500 N. E St., Richmond. Checked cleanup after suppression system. No problems found. OK to open when power is back on. 
• Aug. 14: 1201 Smart, 1201 N. E St., Richmond. Two noncritical violations (repeat issues). No test kit. Gap at bottom of outside door allows pest entry. Both to be corrected in seven days. Previous inspections: Those issues, along with two other noncritical violations (mold-like substance on lid inside ice machine and on soda nozzles), were found July 31. The ice machine/nozzle issues weren’t corrected by an Aug. 1 follow-up inspection, but were corrected by an Aug. 2 check. The test kit and door issue continued Aug. 7. They were to be resolved by Aug. 14, but weren’t.
• Aug. 14: Naomi’s, 15557 Goose Heaven Road, Cambridge City. No violations. The July 17 inspector had found one critical and one noncritical violation because the “coffee base” had been prepared at home and an ice cream scoop was stored in standing water.
