Inspectors discovered two critical and eight noncritical violations during recent routine inspections of local establishments.
The violations ranged from a cafe not having a certified food manager to two concerns about food being stored on the floor.
In addition, two establishments were reminded they need to post the most recent routine inspection form adjacent to the front public entrance for potential customers to view.
Wayne County Health Department employees collected those concerns between July 1-16.
Critical violations
- July 16: 1896 Cafe, 25 W. Main St., Hagerstown. One critical: Establishment doesn’t have a certified food manager. To be corrected by Oct. 5.
- July 8: Pizza King, 203 W. Main St, Richmond. One critical and one noncritical. Critical: Manual can opener observed with food residue. Corrected during inspection. Noncritical: Mold-like substance observed on soda nozzles at server station. To be corrected that day.
Noncritical violations
- July 11: Burger King, 1816 National Road W., Richmond. One noncritical: One box of frozen onion rings was stored on walk-in freezer’s floor, not 6 inches above floor. Corrected during inspection.
- July 10: 5th Street Coffee & Bagels, 211 S. Fifth St. Richmond. Two noncriticals. Ice machine needed cleaning. To be corrected by July 20. Lighting in the meat slicing area was low and needed repair. To be corrected by Aug. 10.
- July 10: Dollar General, 820 S. N St., Richmond. One noncritical. Sixteen packages of bottled water were stored on the floor rather than 6 inches above. To be corrected by July 20.
- July 9: Jack’s Donuts, 3380 National Road E., Richmond. One noncritical. Eleven packages of Capri-Sun, without proper labeling, were stored at customer reach-in cooler. Packages are labeled “Not labeled for individual sale.” To be corrected that day.
- July 8: Best Western Classic Inn, 533 W. Eaton Pike, Richmond. One noncritical. No test kit for sanitizer provided. To be corrected by July 18.
- July 2: Quality Inn and Suites, 5501 National Road E., Richmond. One noncritical. No paper towels or drying device next to hand sink in kitchen. To be corrected that day.
Pre-operational
- July 10: Bikur Cholim D’centerville, 6884 W. U.S. 40, Centerville. OK to open pending approval of all agencies.
- July 10: Tri-Axe Throwing, 821 E. Main, Richmond. OK to open pending approval of all agencies, along with commissary Ann + the Pigs BBQ, 4644 Park Elwood Road, Richmond, at Tri-Axe.
- July 2: Country Quail, 7356 Carlos Road, Williamsburg. Permit is limited to the sale of quail eggs only. OK to open.
New ownership
- July 11: Because of an ownership change, routine inspections were conducted at Early Head Start, 1900 S. L St., Richmond, and Head Start classrooms at 904 N. 13th St., 1845 W. Main St., 855 N. 12th St., 4015 National Road W. and 1322 N.W. Fifth St., all in Richmond, and 629 E. Main St., Hagerstown. No violations found.

Inspections
Wayne County Health Department inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice a year. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
