A truck left Interstate 70 during the evening of Monday, Aug. 12, and crashed into the New Castle Solar Array located at I-70 and Indiana 3, causing significant damage to several solar panels there.
According to a news release from Whitewater Valley REMC, preliminary reports say approximately 150 feet of fencing and three rows of array panels and accompanying equipment were damaged.
Electrical generation and distribution cooperative, Hoosier Energy, is working at the crash site to further assess the damage and secure the area.
Local electric cooperatives Henry County REMC, RushShelby Energy and Whitewater Valley REMC worked with Hoosier Energy in 2015 to bring the solar array to the Henry County area. Partial electrical generation by the site could be restored later Tuesday, Aug. 13.
Whitewater Valley REMC, located in Liberty, Ind., is an electric utility cooperative serving over 9,800 members in Randolph, Wayne, Union, Fayette, Franklin, and Dearborn counties and maintains over 1,800 miles of line.
