Eight establishments were cited for violations in the latest food inspection report. Some violations were corrected the day of inspection, while others received up to two months to correct more difficult issues.

Violations

  • Aug. 3: Dairy Queen, 1018 S. Ninth St., Richmond. Three concerns. A hand sink is needed at front food-preparation area. Correct by Aug. 18. Employee hand-washing signage not provided at employee restroom hand sink. Correct by Sept. 9. Employee preparing food does not have their hair restrained. Correct by Aug. 5.
  • Aug. 5: Lucky Three Food Mart, 1605 E. Main St., Richmond. Three concerns. Signage stating that employees must wash hands not provided in employee restroom. The lid of the trash can in employee restroom is broken. Correct both by Aug 15. Mop sitting in bucket of mop water when not in use rather than being hung to dry. Corrected on site. 
  • Aug. 5: Lucky’s Super Market, 473 E. Main St., Hagerstown. Three concerns. Fourteen containers of pimento cheese, ham salad, macaroni salad and coleslaw were observed in customer reach-in cooler past the 7-day date mark. Items discarded. Containers of potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw, nacho cheese and pimento cheese spread, located with customer reach-in cooler at deli, were not provided with ingredient labels. Approximately 30 containers. Correct by Sept. 5. 
  • Aug. 7: SK Hope Corner Store, 1203 S. 13th St., Richmond. Signage stating “Employees must wash hands” not provided in employee restroom. Correct by Aug. 21. Employee restroom door is not self-closing. Correct by Nov. 7. 
  • Aug. 7: VFW Post No. 1108, 213 S. Eighth St., Richmond. Six concerns. An employee’s wide-mouthed beverage cup was observed in the food preparation area. Packages of raw chicken were observed stored over a package of coleslaw in the walk-in cooler. Both corrected on site. Can opener and sleeve were observed soiled with food debris. Containers of ready-to-eat, TCS foods such as lettuce and hot dogs, stored in the reach-in cooler, are not datemarked 7 days after opening packaging. Boxes of single service items, such as toilet tissue, napkins and cup lids, were observed on the floor rather than a minimum of 6” above the floor in the dry storage room. A test kit to measure quat sanitizer was not provided. Correct all by Aug. 22. 
  • Aug. 11: Burger King, 4360 National Road E., Richmond. One concern. Flies were observed in the food preparation area. Correct by Aug. 18. Follow-up: During a July 27 inspection, five flies were observed within the food preparation facility. Corrected. 
  • Aug. 10: Jimmy John’s, 3413 National Road E., Richmond. An employee was observed using a customer’s cup to scoop ice at the drive-thru window rather than using a suitable utensil. Two employees preparing food did not have their hair properly restrained. Both corrected on site. Beard restraining was also discussed. Correct by Aug. 17. 
  • Aug. 10: Punam LLC, 405 E. Main St., Richmond. Three concerns. Paper towels not provided at hand sink near soda fountains. Paper towels not provided at restroom hand sink. Both corrected on site. Packages of Capri-Sun, located in the reach-in cooler, are not labeled for individual sale. Correct by Aug. 20.

  • Aug. 3: Milton Food Mart, 106 S. Central Ave., Milton. During a July 29 inspection, no test kit. To be corrected by Aug. 3. Item corrected. 
  • Aug. 3: Smoothie King, 537 National Road W., Richmond. During a July 22 inspection, absence of a cutting board. Item corrected.

Have a concern?

WCHD inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice a year. Establishments have 10 days after the results of their inspection during which they can make comments or appeal before the results become available to the public. WCHD officials consider the operator response step an opportunity for operators to tell the public that they have corrected any violations. Any response submitted by the establishment, along with a response from health inspectors, is included with the inspection form when it becomes public. A Wayne County ordinance requires each establishment to display its previous routine inspection report adjacent to the customer entrance. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
