As of Aug. 27, eight establishments were cited for violations in Wayne County Health Department’s food inspection report. Citations varied from simple no posted employee health policy, to more pressing concerns, such as flies in the food preparation area. Three flood-impacted eateries received the green light to reopen for service.

Violations

  • Aug. 17: Little Caesars, 1503 E. Main St., Richmond. One concern. Mold-like substance observed on wall above three-compartment sink. Follow-up: Aug. 25, item corrected.
  • Aug. 18: Seton West, 801 W. Main St., Richmond. Two concerns. No certified food handler at above establishment. Correct by Oct. 18. No employee health policy on site. Corrected via email. 
  • Aug. 19: Tacos Locos, 1339 S. 10th St., Richmond. One concern. Allergen notification not present. The person-in-charge shall notify customers by written notification of the presence of major food allergens as an ingredient in unpackaged food items served or sold to the consumer. Correct by Sept. 5.
  • Aug. 19: Aksh Petroleum, 5890 National Road E., Richmond. Two concerns. No vomit and diarrhea cleanup plan; inspector distributed educational material. No thermometer in reach-in cooler on counter at register with RTE TCS Food. Both corrected on site. 
  • Aug. 19: Seton Catholic High School, 233 S. Fifth St., Richmond. One concern. Male employee observed working with exposed food without beard and hair restraint. Corrected on site. 
  • Aug. 25: Pizza King, 203 W. Main St., Richmond. Five concerns. Soda nozzles observed heavily soiled with food residue. Corrected on site. Door to outside by manager’s office is gapped on side and has an opening at the bottom of door. Floors and walls in need of cleaning, food residue observed throughout kitchen and walk-in cooler. Five flies observed on wall in food prep area and flying around employee preparing pizza dough. Correct all by Sept. 8. 
  • Aug. 26: El Amigo Mexican Food Truck, 1520 N. A St., Richmond. One concern. No cleanup policy at establishment. Corrected on site.
  • Aug. 27: Papa Johns, 1520 E. Main St, Richmond. One concern. Observed seven flies in front kitchen/prep area. To correct by Sept. 10.

Follow-Up

  • Aug. 17: Burger King, 4360 National Road E., Richmond. During an Aug. 11 inspection, flies were observed in the food preparation area. Eight flies were observed in the food preparation/utensil washing area on follow-up. Copies of the previous three pest treatments and the next three treatments were requested. Correct by Sept. 1. 
  • Aug, 17: Jimmy John’s, 3413 National Road E., Richmond. During an Aug. 10 inspection, an employee was observed using a customer’s cup to scoop ice at the drive-thru window rather than using a suitable utensil. Item was corrected. 
  • Aug. 24: VFW Post 1108, 213 S. Eighth St., Richmond. During an Aug. 7 inspection, can opener and sleeve were observed soiled with food debris; containers of ready-to-eat, TCS foods such as lettuce and hot dogs, stored in the reach-in cooler, are not marked seven days after opening packaging; boxes of single-service items, such as toilet tissue, napkins, and cup lids were observed on the floor rather than a minimum of 6” above the floor in the dry storage room; and a test kit to measure quat sanitizer was not provided. All items corrected.

Have a concern?

WCHD inspects local stores, restaurants, schools and other food providers at least twice a year. Establishments have 10 days after the results of their inspection during which they can make comments or appeal before it becomes available to the public. WCHD officials consider the operator response step as an opportunity to tell the public that they have corrected any violations. Any response submitted by the establishment, along with a response from health inspectors, is included with the inspection form when it becomes public. A Wayne County ordinance requires each establishment to display its previous routine inspection report adjacent to the customer entrance. If any critical violations are found, inspectors follow up to ensure the establishment has made the necessary corrections. They also make visits if members of the public submit complaints.
